Colour, sheen & traditional finishes

Build the palette around the surfaces you cannot change: the brick beside the window, the timber floor, a stone counter or the upholstery in a bar. Colour then becomes a decision about the room as a whole.

Test the colour where it will be seen

Place a proposed tone beside the retained materials and repeat the assessment at the darkest part of the space. Look at it with the actual lamps switched on, including any warm bar lighting or cool task lighting. Record the location of each trial so a preference formed in one corner is not mistaken for approval throughout the property.

Choose sheen with the detail

A low-sheen wall and a more reflective door can share a colour reference while reading differently. Compare a sample on a moulded edge as well as a broad face. Identify surfaces likely to be handled or cleaned, then review the manufacturer’s suitability and maintenance information. Keep that performance discussion alongside the visual choice.

Treat traditional materials as a specification question

Limewash, distemper, eggshell and oil-based finishes belong in a discussion of the particular background and existing coatings. Historic England notes that lime render and stucco may need moisture-permeable finishes. Obtain appropriate advice where historic materials or previous treatments are uncertain; a traditional product name alone cannot establish compatibility.

Create a record someone else can use

For every approved surface, write the room or elevation, component, product, colour and sheen together. Attach the relevant sample approval and note any preparation assumptions still awaiting assessment. Where the exterior or common parts need an owner’s decision, leave that item expressly pending. The agreed schedule should make the next instruction clear without relying on a photograph of a colour card.
